CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT WEDDING MYTHS

This is exactly how last night I was remembering with my sister Nico some of the curious and fun stuff behind wedding myths and legends that I learned once in my Weddings Beautiful World Wide Wedding Planner´s Certification.

Of course I couldn´t remember all of them, the symbols and myths can change from country to country and they are almost the same but the cultures quite have their own ways of having costumes from their natives.

So I go on line and find these amazing article written by Chris Hawkins from http://basingstokeweddings.com/2008/11/wedding-myths-and-symbols/
were I take some of my favorite myths and share them here with others that I know from my familly and culture.

I will complete with some of my DESTINATION WEDDING MEXICAN TIPS.

1st of all I found out that there is a rhyme that tells how choosing the wrong day can affect you lives:

Monday for health,

Tuesday for wealth,

Wednesday´s the bes of all.

Thursday brings crosses,

And Friday Losses,

But Saturday - no luck at all.

ANOTHER LUCKY ADVICE FOR THE SOON TO BE MARRIED:

It is good luck for the groom not to see the dress before the wedding day. It will bring more luck if he does not glance at the dress as the bride walks down the aisle. (of course this superstition is crazy and impossible the best moment is when the bride is walking down the isle, I JUST LOVE TO TAKE PHOTOS OF THE FACE OF THE GROOM on that very moment)

MOVING ON TO THE NEXT SUBJECT:

Jewellery as expected has a number of myths linked to it. To some, pearls represent future tears and are a bad sign. However, to others, the wearing of pearls takes the place of the bride’s real tears, thus she’ll have a happy, tear-free wedded life. (My mom says pearls=TEARS, so no pearls for us in the family weddings)

The wedding veil is thought to hide the bride’s beauty and wards off evil spirits. Another explanation is that during the times of arranged marriages the bride’s face would be covered until the groom had committed to the marriage. ( This could be either romantic of frightening)

On the day itself, there are many things to remember if your courting good luck on your wedding day.

The most famous (my favorite) saying dates back to Victorian times and the full version:

"something old, something new, something borrowed,

something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe"

Something old, represents the link with the bride’s family and the past. A common solution many bride’s choose is to wear a piece of family jewellery or their mother´s.

Something borrowed, is to remind the bride that friends and family will be there for her when help is needed. The borrowed object might be something such as a lace handkerchief or an item of jewellery.other’s or grandmother’s wedding dress.

Something new, is for good fortune and success in the bride’s new life. The wedding dress is often chosen as the new item.

Something blue, symbolises faithfulness and loyalty and dates back to biblical times when blue represented purity. Frequently the bride’s garter is the blue item.

And lastly the “silver sixpence in her shoe” is to wish the bride wealth, both financial and

happiness. You can still find Silver sixpences for a few pounds, but modern brides have resorted to penny’s and don’t seem to have fallen foul yet. With modern shoes its getting harder to put a coin into them in a way that stops them falling out seconds afterwards, I always put a drop of glue to my brides and then just take it out after the ceremony. (only if you bring one with you)

Then there is the rings, much can be written about them, but for now there is a contradictory wedding myth. The positive myth is that dropping the wedding ring during the ceremony shakes out the evil spirits.

The negative aspect, is that whoever drops the ring is said to be the first to die.

Confetti has replaced rice or grain. After the ceremony

the rice was thrown at the bride and groom to encourage fertility.

The throwing of the wedding bouquet was introduced from North America and it is said that who ever catches the bouquet will be next to be married. (so not true) I have caught it twice and have yet not gotten married (LOL).

Wedding gifts are bought by the guests have replaced the custom of bringing fruits that used to encourage fertility.

The tradition of giving guests something to remember the day by in the form of favours has been around for hundreds of years.

Today, the tradition has evolved to giving each guest five sugar coated almonds to symbolise health, wealth, fertility, happiness and long-life.

Carrying the bride over the threshold protects her from any evil spirits that may be lurking in the new home.

BEACH DESTINATION (mexican) WEDDING interesting facts by Ilse Diamant.

1. If you have your ceremony in MEXICO be sure to have your
florist make you 3 BOUQUETS:
  • For the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe at the end of the religious Ceremony as a symbol of gratefulness
  • To toss the bouquet for a lucky single lady to be the next in line for marriage
  • The brides bouquet for her photos and to walk down the isle.
Another thing you need to have in mind is the TORNABODA (after hours lunch break)
WE love to have "chilaquiles", or "tortas" and tacos of "cochinita" around 1am, to sober the party down a bit and be sure everyone leaves safe ´n sound.

My mom is telling me tales about her hometown Oaxaca and their traditions and this one funny (mom with all your respect) she told me the Groom goes to the house of the parents of the bride with a big TRUNK or CHEST and the mom puts all the belongings of the bride in their symbolizing that she is now leaving the parents home to go to her husbands. (this is very old and of course modern times have forgotten some traditions)

The last one for now would be the TOSSING of the GROOM (personally I don't like it at all) This is the part were the friends for the groom take him like if he was a rock star and start trowing him in the air and the bride feels they will trow
him to the floor, OMG I get so nervous with this one (and so does the brides). And after that he takes the BAND out of the BRIDES leg (sexy music plays) and he tosses the band who ever catches the band will be the next single guy to tie the knot.

This last part is very funny usually girls fight over the bouquet and guys scape from the band.
